Ruby is an outstanding example of the Labrador breed. She is a confident dog with very high drive. She is smart and a little sassy! After she is worked, she has a GREAT off switch and loves to snuggle at the end of the day. Ruby has been my constant companion since I brought her home. I take her with me everywhere I can and she is always a joy to have. In fact, I built a canoe just to make sure Ruby got to go with our family when we went out Kayaking!
As a working dog, Ruby is the perfect size! She is a lot of dog packed into a small package, which is incredibly convenient if you have to get over a fence or put your dog into a small area to search. When she is working Ruby is very serious and focused, and she strikes a nice balance between independence and taking direction from her handler. She easily ranges out and moves into areas to which she is directed. When we search, Ruby works at a good distance that allows us to cover a lot of ground when searching. When taking corrections Ruby falls on the soft side of "hard", and she easily takes and works through moderate corrections without diminished drive. Ruby has performed well in all of her deployments, never bothered by her environment. Ruby tends to start working at 100 miles per hours, but will settle into a ground-covering trot for longer searches. Regardless of her pace, she always stays in the zone when its time to work. Ruby is not a dog for everyone! As beautiful and as talented Ruby is, she can be a handful. She was headstrong as a pup, and that never changed. Using positive training methods and proofing with some positive punishment she has developed into an amazing dog. Her drive and confidence has always been outstanding and those traits have allowed us to reach our potential as a K9 Search Team. Please check out our Video's page to see some YouTube videos of Ruby training and working. Several of our training sessions show her as a very young pup and are being conducted in unfamiliar locations. These are made available to show what her temperament looked like at that stage in her development.
Here is a short video of a very pregnant Ruby. She has been very sweet and full of personality. This is Ruby with her new toy.
